An early spring Boston graduation photoshoot at MIT
It’s time to CELEBRATE– Kathleen is graduating from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts and I had the absolute pleasure of serving as her Boston graduation photographer!
We met up at Killian Court on the MIT campus, where we had a gorgeous view of the Boston skyline in one direction and the Great Dome in the opposite direction. You can’t get much better than that for your Boston graduation photos!
I was so excited to explore the campus with Kath, who was the sweetest soon-to-be graduate; I couldn’t help but smile through our entire shoot as we chatted about Boston, school, and life. I especially loved hearing about her MIT experience and bonding over the senioritis we’re both experiencing during our last semesters of college as we walked through the windy campus, which seemed to be winding down on this Friday evening.
I also fell in love with her timeless graduation dress, which she helpfully informed me was purchased at Reformation: one of my favorite places to recommend for Boston grads to get their outfits!
We made sure to grab some close-up shots of Kathleen’s MIT ring, which is part of a significant tradition for MIT grads. She told me that she received her ring two years ago during their ring ceremony, which signifies that a student is halfway to their goal of graduating with a degree from MIT. I love that Kath wore her ring to our session; definitely a full-circle moment now that she’s about to reach the incredible milestone of graduating from this prestigious university!
After graduation, Kathleen shared with me that she’s headed to LA to begin a new job and I am so excited for her!! I love getting to celebrate with my grads as I take their photos and share in the joy and excitement that comes along with this new life chapter.
The best places on campus to take MIT graduation photos
This was my first time taking graduation photos at MIT and it was a Boston graduation photographer’s dream. The MIT campus lends itself to gorgeous graduation pictures, with nearly every part of the campus serving as a picturesque backdrop. I wanted to highlight some of my favorite places where Kathleen and I stopped to take photos (hopefully they’ll help you if you’re planning to take MIT graduation photos!):
Killian Court & The Great Dome
Some of my favorite photos from this shoot were taken right outside the Great Dome, which is impossible to miss when standing anywhere on Killian Court. This iconic building makes for a stunning backdrop to MIT graduation photos. Pro tip: stand pretty far away from the Dome to make sure you can see the whole thing in your photos!
Outside Lobby 10
After grabbing our shots with the Great Dome clearly visible in the background, Kathleen and I walked closer to the building and captured some images on the steps outside Lobby 10. The pillars are so fun to play around with to grab a bunch of different poses– all in one little location!
Memorial Lobby
After taking photos on the steps outside, we headed inside the Memorial Lobby contained within Building 10 at MIT. This space is decked out in cream and gold, bringing a classic feel to the shots we took inside.
Main Entrance at 77 Massachusetts Avenue
This is a must-photograph spot when at MIT. These pillars just look way too grand to pass up! I also had Kathleen jump up on the ledge above the “Massachusetts Avenue” signage to grab some adorable shots of her sitting up there. Absolutely love how these ones came out!! This is another location where it was helpful for me to stand some distance away from the building for some of the shots so we could see the whole building in all its beauty for these grad photos.
Boston skyline on Memorial Drive
We finished up these MIT graduation photos by running across Memorial Drive to grab some photos with the beautiful Boston skyline in the background. I’ll never get tired of that view! Including the iconic skyline in your Boston graduation photos definitely feels fitting to commemorate the time you’ve spent getting your degree in this wonderful city. We were definitely battling the wind by the water, but I’m confident that these are must-have photos!!
